Natural Liver Therapies

NATURAL LIVER THERAPY AND NUTRITION

separator

Some of the more important functions of our liver consist of filtering 2 quarts of blood a minute, storing and processing blood hemoglobin for its iron content, storing fat soluble vitamins and minerals, storing excess glucose as glycogen, producing bile (1 quart per day) and metabolizing proteins, carbohydrates and fats to provide energy and nutrients.

Foremost is its detoxifying function. Both internally and externally produced toxins are transformed from fat soluble chemicals into water soluble compounds so they can be released by the kidneys or emulsified by bile in the intestines where they bind with digested food and fiber to form the stool we excrete.

TOXIC OVERLOAD

Dietary and environmental toxins place a lot of stress on our liver. That is why it essential to remove all sources of toxins that are taxing our liver and undermining our immune system. This includes additives, colors, waxes, flavorings, preservatives, pesticides and herbicides. Alcohol is also very toxic to the liver and must be avoided when liver disease is present or if we want to avoid taxing our liver.

Toxins are stored in the fat of animals. Keeping animal products at a minimum is a good idea not only to keep fat content and toxins low but also to keep our exposure to naturally occurring disease related microbes lower. According to Dr. Robert O. Young, meat and other animal products can contain 336,000,000 per serving of pathogenic micro organisms. In contrast, plant foods contain less than 10 per gram.

DIETARY GUIDELINES

A diet that consists of less than 30% fat is a good target to keep the liver from working too hard. It also needs to be noted that fats become rancid easily. Overheating and processing can create dangerous free radicals which are damaging to our cells.

Always check the freshness of foods with fat in them, such as seeds, nuts, nut butters, grains, flours, oils, salad dressings and other foods or condiments with oil added. Keep them refrigerated to maintain freshness. Never fry or heat oils to high temperatures and avoid any product with hydrogenated oil in it. Hydrogenation adds hydrogen to oil making it saturated and not easily assimilated. Choose monosaturated and polyunsaturated oils such as olive, safflower, sunflower seed, sesame seed, flax seed, pumpkin seed, soybean, lecithin or fish. For more information, see see this page.

Foods high in fiber are the cornerstone of a health improving diet. Bile carries toxic substances into the intestines, where fiber can help to speed up the transit time of the stool out of the intestines. In this way carcinogenic chemicals are not hanging around to damage the walls of the intestines or to be possibly re-absorbed into the body.

Foods high in fiber include whole grains and cereals, whole grain flours, brown rice, bran, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, fruits and vegetables (with their skins left on if they are organic).

Not only is it important to reduce animal products because of their high fat content, but also because of the acid ash they leave in our bodies when they are digested and broken down . This acid ash must be buffered so it can be eliminated by the kidneys. This requires minerals which are then carried with the urine out of our body. If we have enough minerals from the foods we are eating this is fine, but when our diets are very high in acid producing ash or low in minerals our body will take the minerals it needs from other cells. These will especially be removed from our bones and bile. Minerals are very deficient in our soils these days and therefore low in our diets. If this borrowing continues for a long time we eventually will suffer illness due to depletion of necessary minerals. For more information, see this page.

The liver has the remarkable ability to restore itself and it can function with 80% deterioration. This is the good news. If we stop polluting our body and work to rebuild our liver we can enjoy a relatively healthy life and joyful existence even with severe liver disease. A healthy diet consisting of certain supplements, herbs and nutrients can stimulate this process of detoxification so the liver may regenerate.

Enzymes, minerals, and vitamins are used by the liver in its process of detoxifying.

These are included in food such as:
• Cabbage, broccoli and brussels sprouts, which contain a certain phytochemical called indole-3-carbinol. This is also a anti-cancer compound and stimulates detoxifying enzymes in the gut.

• Oranges, lemon, tangerines and the seeds of caraway and dill contain limonene. This is also an anti-cancer phytochemical. Starting the day with one to two glasses of fresh lemon, orange or tangerine juice to cleanse the liver is a good liver supportive practice. Dill and caraway make healthy seasonings for the food we eat or can be used to create tasty teas.

• Nutritional yeast and whole grains are sources of B vitamins.

• Melons, peppers, tomatoes and fresh fruits. all good sources of Vitamin C.

• Turmeric, which is a spice that contains curcumin, is also regenerating to liver cells and cleanses the liver of toxins. It decreases cholesterol and also inhibits the carcinogen benzopyrene found in meat. This spice is found in curry dishes and can be included in food preparations or taken in powdered form in a gel capsule or as an additive to juices. It has a bitter flavor.

• Certain amino acids are used by the liver to bind with toxic chemicals so it may carry them away or neutralize them, these include: Glutamine, ornithine, arginine, and especially glutathione. Glutathione is one of the most important liver antioxidants. We destroy it in our body when we take Tylenol. Glutathione is an amino acid complex made up of Cysteine, Glutamic acid and Glycine. Dietary sources of Glutathione include fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked meats and fish, onions and garlic, and sprouted seeds.

• Fenugreek seeds are particularly supportive of liver function and help with digestion. They are also highly anti-bacterial.

• All sprouts (read below to learn how to make and care for your own sprouts) are power houses of enzymes, vitamins and minerals, having superior nutritive value. A sprouted seed adds protein to our diets and essential energy. It is bursting with life force. Including sprouts in the diet is easy, fun and tasty.

• Other food sources to support Glutathione production are Glutamic acid and the dietary sources of cysteine (found in meat, fish, eggs, soy, wheat gluten and Brazil nuts). Glutamic acid needs zinc and copper for its absorption. Zinc is also needed for tissue repair and acts as an anti viral. Good sources of zinc can be found in Brewer's yeast, dulse, kelp, egg yolks, fish and lamb. Sources of copper include almonds, green leafy vegetabes, avocado, beets and black strap molasses.

• Another mineral needed by the liver to neutralize harmful sulfites to safer sulfates is Molybdenum. Sulfites are found naturally and added as preservatives in wines. Salad and vegetables bars and even some grocery store fruit and vegetable displays use sulfites to keep produce fresher looking. It is important to ask restaurant and store managers if they use sulfites at their establishment. As we have mentioned before, minerals are very depleted in our soils and therefore in our foods, so getting the molybdenum we need may be difficult.

One may choose to take a supplement to get an adequate supply of all minerals. Products such as Perfect Food, Fruits of Life, Radical Fruits and Living Multi can provide needed vitamins and minerals.
You can read about these products at: WHOLEFOODPRODUCTS.

• Dietary sources of molybdenum include legumes, whole grain cereals, milk, dark green and leafy vegetables and organ meats of kidney and liver. These organ meats are hard to find in a non-toxic state due to the meat raising practices prescribed to in many countries. Animals are fed hormones and many other chemicals to enhance their meat production. These chemicals have settled into the animal's organs of detoxification, namely kidneys and liver. This meat is counterproductive to our original purpose for eating it. Unless you personally know that the animal has only been fed organically, I would not eat organ meats of any animal raised with today's toxic practices.

• Miso lowers cholesterol and helps to neutralize environmental toxins in the intestines. It is also alkalizing for our system. It can be taken as a soup, mixed into food we are eating, or made into a tea or broth.

• Dulse and other sea vegetables are a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates, enzymes, fiber, vitamins, chlorophyll, iodine and other minerals. They are alkalizing and also neutralize envionmental toxins from our intestines.

• Sea vegetables can be added when cooking rice or other grains, put into stews and soups, or added to bean dishes. Dulse and Kelp are delicious when eaten raw in salads or mixed into dips, sprinkled onto foods or used wherever your imagination takes you.

As we can see many foods can be useful for natural liver therapy. They provide support to the liver while they nourish us. Learn to include them in your diet.

HOW TO MAKE AND CARE FOR YOUR OWN SPROUTS

There are sprouting devices that are for sale at most health food stores or through some seed catalogs (Johnny's Seeds is one). You can easily make your own sprouter from a large mouth glass jar with a screen piece to cover and a large rubber band to secure. Rinsing frequently throughout the day and keeping your seeds well drained between rinsing will produce a nutritious whole food in just a few days. It is important to use filtered or spring water or any source of water that is not bacteria-laden to ensure the quality of your sprouts. Also take care to check for mold and do not eat them if they have any. The sprouting trays make for a more consistent level of quality sprouts and do not require as much time for rinsing as they provide adequate drainage to prevent molding.

FOODS, HERBS & SUPPLEMENTATION FOR LIVER CLEANSING

separator

According to Michael Murray N.D. and Joseph Pizzorno N.D., in their Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, there are certain supplements that will aid the internal cleansing process of the liver and colon.

Artichokes are very liver regenerating.

Phospholipids (lecithin) help to normalize bile function as well as regenerate damaged tissue. It also protects against choline deficiency. Our cell membranes are made up of lecithin primarily, so we can see how this could be helpful to the intergrity of our cells. Lecithin can be added to smoothies and fruit or vegetable juices, sprinkled on fruits, grains, vegetables cereal etc. Take 1-2 tbsp. per day.

Choline is a B vitamin essential for fat metabolism and helps prevent fat from depositing in the liver. Choline also protects against damage by alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs to the liver.

Milk Thistle (silymarin) is a plant pigment or bioflavinoid that protects the liver from free radical damage and other harmful substances. It alters the outer wall of the cell so poisons can not enter. It regenerates the liver cells by stimulating protein synthesis. It also inhibits the depletion of glutathione which is the most important liver antioxidant. Studies have shown it to be effective in Hepatitis and Cirrohsis. It can be taken in pill form for higher concentration and standardized potency. I have seen it recommended at the minimum of 200 mg. 3-4 times a day and upward to 5 grams a day.

High doses of food-form Vitamin C are known to inhibit bacterial and viral infection. When taking high doses of Vitamin C you will know you have met your maximum dose when you experience diarrhea. At this point drop down the dose until you no longer have the gastrointestinal symptoms. Vitamin C is water soluble so it is better to take it in divided doses throughout the day rather than one or two larger doses.

Taking a fiber supplement such as Super Seed, psyllium or Chitosan can be helpful to regulate elimination. Be sure to drink plenty of water when using such products or you may find they are binding to your system.

Dandelion Root clears obstuctions and stimulates detoxification of the liver and gall bladder. It helps to detoxify fats from our system as well. It is a diuretic so it helps eliminate toxins through the kidneys. It stimulates bile flow, which stimulates elimination. When bile is not released from the liver it can be damaging to the liver tissue. Dandelion is also high in easily assimilated minerals, which are needed for many functions in the body. As we mentioned minerals are in short supply in our foods because our soils are depleted. Dandelion can be bought as a dried herb and taken as a tea, in capsules or as a tincture (alcohol free only).

Burdock Root is a strong blood cleanser and stimulates the lymph system. It increases kidney function so the blood can be cleansed of harmful acids. It increases sweating (diaphoresis) which also helps to clear out toxins. It is very tonic and regenerating when eaten regularly. It clears heat from the liver which is "hot" during any inflammatory ("itis") condition. In Chinese medicine it is is known to dispel anger and aggression which are emotions stored in and associated with the liver. (For more information, see my website here.

Burdock can be found in certain supermarkets, especially those that cater to an oriental clientele. It is known also as Gobo. It is a long slender root crop that can be steamed and eaten. It is also available as a dried root and taken as a tea, capsules or tincture (alcohol free only).

Yellow Dock is also a blood and lymph system cleanser. It also reduces heat from the body which is high in liver disease. It is helpful for building blood in anemia caused when the bile in circulation has broken down red blood cells. It also clears and promotes cerebral circulation which is effected when encephalopathy, a side effect of severe liver damage, is present. Encephalopathy sometimes shows up as brain fog and other symptoms of deteriorating brain function, as there is a swelling of the brain tissue. Yellow Dock can be used as a herb tea or taken as capsules or as an tincture (alcohol free only).

Red Clover eliminates toxins through the skin, kidneys, lungs and bowels. It is pleasant tasting and can be used for long term use. It increases the efficiency of our phagocytes, which are the immune cells that engulf foreign bodies in our blood. It can be taken as a herb tea or in capsules or as a tincture (alcohol free only).

Aloe Vera is a wonderful immune modulating, detoxifying, anti inflammatory tonic for the liver and spleen. It tonifies the digestive enzymes and regulates sugar and fat metabolism. It is synergestic, meaning it helps other products work better. Aloe communicates at the receptor sites of the cells making it difficult for harmful molecular information to enter the cell. To read more information on cells and their receptor sites: click here.

Aloe can be taken as the whole plant juiced or blended and mixed with water or juice. It is not very pleasant tasting when eaten alone, however, mixed in a smoothie it is not noticeable. There are many commercial aloe products but many have little or no value. This is because they have been processed in such a way that the mucopolysaccharides have become unstable and are destroyed. Many products also add preservatives and other additives making them harmful and toxic in themselves. This is why I recommend aloe from a reputable source such as, Aloe Immune.

Blue green algae, Spirulina and Perfect Food are a highly nutritive food source with many vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It is one of the few sources of Vitamin B12 which is not from animal products. It detoxifies, and increases the desired alkaline quality of the blood. It is highly oxygenating due to its high chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is similar to the hemoglobin molecule of our blood, except it has magnesium at its center instead of iron.

The green food product I recommend is called Perfect Food. This is a highly concentrated whole food. There are no fillers such as apple pectin, oat bran, lecithin added. There are no herbs, vitamin and mineral isolates. The ingredients are certified organic and have no pesticide or herbicide residues. One serving of 2 tablespoons provides the equivalent of 10 servings of fresh vergetables and the vitamin C of 2 servings of fruit. There are very high percentages of green foods per serving and densely concentrated certified organic grass juices. It also contains a patented blend of homeostatic soil organisms and lactobacillus salivarius/plantarum which have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-tumor characteristics.

Medicinal Mushrooms such as Reishi, shitake and maitake are regenerating to the liver, and they also decrease cholesterol and allergy symptoms. They are generally immune stimulating. They are considered anti hepatitis. They can be used in food preparation and are also available in tablets and capsules. They are often part of many Chinese Herbal formulas.

Astragalus Root is antiviral and has the ability to stimulate the body's natural interferon production. It also reduces excess fluid retention from the body. It can be cooked in rice, other grains, soup or beans. It is also available in capsules and as a tincture (alcohol free only)

Schizandra Berries are also known to increase the body's immune function. It works to protect the liver and is a known adaptogen. Use as a tea or in capsule form or as a tincture (alcohol free only).

MSM (methylsulphonylmethane) is a natural source of sulfur. Sulfur is the 3rd most abundant element in our body and needed for many chemical conversions and reactions. It helps with protein absorption and tissue repair. It can be taken in doses from 500 mg. per day to upwards of 2500 mg. Many people take it at much higher levels, as much as 25 grams (25,000 mg). It is non toxic at even such high levels though one would need to gradually increase their intake when taking these high doses or they could suffer a detoxifying overload and uncomfortable symptoms such as headache, nausea, skin eruptions and gastro-intestinal distress. It is bitter tasting and available as a powder or capsules.

Plant sterols and sterolins are plant fats that are in fruits and vegetables. They are sometimes called glucosides. They are one of the many active molecules isolated from plants that have healing and protective effects on the immune system. They block the the overproduction of chemicals associated with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. They also modulate the function of T-cells which specialize in fighting viruses and certain bacteria.

Sterols and sterolins have been shown to be effective in immune dysfunctions, allergies, viruses, fibromyalgia, BPH, MS, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, lupus, psoriasis, diabetes, some tumors, TB and other disease proceeses. One of the highest sources of these sterols/sterolins is found in the African Potato and Oil Seed plant. These remarkable molecules are the precursors to Pregnenolone and then DHEA.

Since they are dissipated from plants 6-8 hours after harvest and our food preparation techniques of freezing and boiling destroy them, unless we are growing our own food and eating raw foods we may get very little of these needed sterols/sterolins.

Transfer Factors are small immune messenger molecules which transfer immune recognition signals between our immune cells and thereby assist immune cells to recognize invading organisms. Colostrum contains immune system messengers called Transfer Factors. They have been shown to be successful in treating viral, parasitic, auto immune, fungal, bacterial, neurological, mycobacterial and malignant diseases. They are immuno-regulating and help to keep our immune system balanced. Transfer Factors have been shown to induce an immune response in less than 24 hours, yet suppress over-reactions preventing auto immune diseases and allergies. Transfer Factors from one species is equally effective in another species.

There is a protocol being used by Dr. Burt Berkson at the Integrative Center of New Mexico which is showing success. Dr. Berkson is giving his patients 600 mg. mgs.of alpha-lipoic acid, 400 mcgs.of selenium and 900 mgs. of silymarin milk thistle, as a positive treatment for patients with severe liver damage. These are taken in divided doses three times a day. These patients had cirrhosis of the liver, portal hypertension and esophogeal varices. These products seem to protect against free radical damage and viral proliferation.

There are many companies now producing Hep C formulas with a combination of known herbal and supplemental helpers. These supplements and herbal therapies can be used to repair, strengthen and cleanse the liver. You may want to share this information with your physician or health care provider.

NATURAL LIVER THERAPY USING OXYGEN AND ESSENTIAL OILS

separator

OXYGEN THERAPY

High levels of oxygen are important to body and especially to an impaired liver. About 90% of the body's regeneration and maintenance is dependent on oxygen. We actually need 3 times more oxygen than we take in from normal breathing, therefore we must get it from other sources. This can come from the foods we eat, from exercising and increasing the depth of our breathing, being in the fresh air and from oxygen products, such as ozone & hydrogen peroxide.

Oxygen is depleted from our body during the metabolism of our foods, so it is important to only eat high quality food. Eliminate junk food from the diets as they take up more oxygen to metabolize than they give. Fats have 15% (or less) of their weight made up of oxygen, proteins have 20-40% of their weight and carbohydrates (nuts, seeds, veggies and whole grains) have the most at 50% of their weight made up of oxygen. Here we can see why a carbohydrate rich diet can give us more vital oxygen than a fat laden or junk food diet can. We do not want to waste our precious oxygen to metabolize and oxidize food that has little or no nutritive value.

Herbs and vitamins increase our blood oxygen level by 6-7%, mineral and hydrogen peroxide increases it by 9% and essential oils by far at the highest level of 21%.
Hydrogen Peroxide can be used in many applications, however one of the simplest, safest and easiest methods is to apply it through the bath water (1 cup of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide to a bath tub full of water). It can also be rubbed on the bottoms of the feet. You can make a solution for rubbing on the feet at a 1oz. hydrogen peroxide to 11ozs. of distilled water dilution. It can also be mixed with aloe vera gel for rubbing on the body.

Another great oxygenator, is a dietary supplement called CellFood. This super-concenrated ionic formula contains dissolved oxygen, 78 ionic minerals, 34 enzymes, 17 amino acids and electrolytes to generate and deliver vital oxygen and hydrogen to the body for up to three days. It works to increase the body's cellular respiration. Waste products and toxins can be more easily removed by the cells and the available oxygen and hydrogen can be used to repair and rebuild tissue. Greater assimilation of all other herbs, vitamins, minerals and nutrients can take place, resulting in increased energy. This product supports the healthful functioning of all body systems when taken in water or juice. It normalizes acid/alkaline balance, helping to create a less acidic blood pH. As it is quickly absorbed, CellFood is effective and efficient. Click on my products page to learn more about Lumina Health's CellFood and their other great products.

ESSENTIAL OIL THERAPY

Essential oils are covered in greater length here.. The many constituents of essential oils make them helpful for all sorts of physical and emotional issues.

It is most important to use only pure and unadulterated oils that are organically grown. Be sure to consult a knowledgeable practitioner if taking oils internally. It is best to use them externally with a carrier oil to dilute or as an inhalant. It is also important to know the safety precautions when using essential oils. There are many doctors, especially in France who understand the value of essential oils and use them in their medical practices.

For support of the liver and related symptom's of Hepatitis C we have found the following to be useful:

Peppermint is a cooling oil good for gastrointestinal discomforts ranging from nausea, vomiting, spasms, flatulence and unpleasant breath due to stomach imbalance. It can be rubbed on the stomach or under the right rib cage (liver area); also at liver and stomach points at the bottom of the feet.

Yarrow is a very cooling oil. It helps alleviate inflammation. It is soothing to the stomach and the skin. It can be rubbed on the stomach or on inflamed skin, mixed with a carrier oil of your choice.

Roman and German Chamomiles & Lavender are calming and soothing. They can help when one is feeling restless or irritable or when you want to get to sleep. They are also calming to the skin when it is inflamed and itchy. Use a drop on your pillow, on a handkerchief to breath in, as a massage oil or as a lotion applied topically to skin.

Rose is a very high vibration oil. It is stimulating to bile flow and is cooling to the liver. It helps with hepatic congestion. It helps to elevate the mind and create a sense of well being. It can be used as an inhalant by placing a drop on a handkerchief or as a liver compress.

Lemon is high in limonenes which are helpful to the liver enzymes that aid in detoxifying. It supports the immune system by increasing the white blood count. It is high in Vitamins (B, A and of course C). It increases lymph function and promotes a sense of well being.

Grapefruit & Cypress are helpful when there is ascites and/or edema to move fluids and help reduce water retention. They are decongesting to the lymph and circulatory systems. They can be massaged into tissue or used in the bath water.

Helichrysum is a very regenerating oil. It reduces pain and regenerates tissue and can absorb scar tissue (especially good when cirrhosis is present). It increases circulatory function, regulates cholesterol and stimulates liver cell function.

Rosemary also helps with hepatic congestion, it helps overcome mental fatigue and supports the immune system. This is a stimulating oil so it is best not to use it when you are wanting to sleep. It is a good antioxidant. AVOID USE WHEN HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS PRESENT.

In general, when making a massage oil use about 10-15 drops of this essential oil to one ounce of carrier oil. For a bath use 6-8 drops of oil to a tub full of water. Mix oils in a little milk to emulsify or they will stay on the top of the water. At least, stir the water often as it is filling up the tub.

GALL BLADDER LIVER CLEANSE

separator

A gall bladder liver cleanse can be done as a longer 7-10 day cleanse or as a shorter 3-5 day minimum program, which I will describe here.

PREPARATIONS

To prepare for the "flush", one needs to eliminate oils, sugar, nuts, processed foods, cheese, alcohol and animal products, for a minimum of 3-5 days, moving toward a diet centered around steamed veggies (not raw) and low salt, natural foods. Eating this way for a longer period of time before you start the flush will make the process more effective. It will work to start a cleansing process in the body.

Remember you are eating lightly and cleanly. No junk food, greasy, high fat or sugary foods. If you want a more thorough flush, you can fast from all solid foods for the entire period, drinking only liquids and the juice that has the orthophosphoric acid added to it.

Drink 3 quarts of water (96 ounces) minimum throughout each day. Juices, teas and soups are not included in the 96 ounces, they are additional items. You also need to drink a minimum of 3 quarts (96 ounces) organic unsweetened apple juice OR 1/2 gallon (64 ounces) of organic carrot juice with 30 drops of orthophosphoric acid added to each quart. Drink this mixture throughout the day. I diluted the juice and still got good results. If you have problems with high blood sugar and can not tolerate the high sugar content of the apple juice, even though it has NO added sugars, dilute the juice, 50-50 juice and filtered water. Be sure to have the volume of 3 quarts even IF diluted.

You may need the help of a naturopath or your local pharmacy or health food store to procure the orthophosphoric acid. If you have difficulty finding it, email me at essentialhealth2@gmail.com. It is important to have this included because it works to dissolve the sludge and bile stones in the gallbadder.

No matter how many days you decide to eat lightly as described above, on the last day, drink the water, juices and orthophosphoric acid but eat no food. This may make you feel irritable, reactive and toxic but it will give your digestive system a rest and add to the quality of the cleansing. Rest and relax as much as possible during this cleansing time.

FLUSH INSTRUCTIONS

Before going to sleep the night before the flush drink 6-8 ounces of organic, extra-virgin olive oil then 1/4 cup of organic lemon, lime or grapefruit juice. You can squish the citrus juice around your mouth to get the oily taste and texture out. It works best to just drink the olive oil directly and not slowly sip it. Sipping just prolongs the oily taste and seems to make it more difficult to swallow.

Next, drink 2 teaspoons of epsom salt that has been dissolved in a small amount of water (approximately 4 tablespoons of water, or enough to dissove the epsom salts and make it liquid enough to drink). The epsom salt will help dilate the gallbladder bile ducts so stones and materials can pass more easily. After this, you want to go to bed and lie on your right side with your left leg drawn up. You will want to stay this way if you can all night, this will allow the liver and gallbladder to assimilate this mixture more easily. You may feel a bit queasy but only rarely will a person vomit. If you should, just go back to bed make yourself as comfortable as possible and wait for the morning. You DO NOT have to take more olive oil.

In the morning, when you wake up, do another dose of the epsom salt drink as above. Now it is time for your coffee enema.
You might want to prepare the coffee for your morning enema the night before, so you do not have to deal with it in the morning, as you may feel a bit queasy still.

DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING THE COFFEE ENEMA

Steep 4-6 teaspoons of organic coffee, in a cup of water for fifteen minutes. This will make a nice strong cup. If you are doing this the night before, store the coffee in a covered glass jar overnight. (You will only have to reheat it to room temperature in the morning). If this is being done in the morning, once the water is boiling, add the coffee, turn off the heat and cover. Let steep for 15 minutes. Once it is at room temperature put it into your enema bag which has been filled with 1-1/2 quarts of of body temperature distilled or filtered water. Make sure it is not too hot or cold. Hot obviously can cause injury and cold will cause a releasing reaction and you may evacuate immediately.

You will want to use a 30 inch colon tube, if you can find one. This length helps to get the enema contents way up into the intestines. If you can not find a 30 inch tube than use the regular tubing tip that came with your enema bag. You can purchase a bag at your local pharmacy or medical supply store. If you are using a short tip and want to insert more to get a deeper insertion, be sure you have well lubricated the tip and are careful to rotate as you are pushing upward to prevent kinking. If you have kinks then your water will not flow into your intestines. It is a good idea to read a book or other enema instructions BEFORE doing this procedure to become well informed on the principles of taking an enema. These instructions are only basic guidelines.

ADMINISTERING THE COFFEE ENEMA

Lie on the floor comfortably and keep warm, as you will be hanging out for 20 minutes. Bring a book to read, listen to music or talk to a friend. Whatever it takes to hang in for 20 minutes. Elevate your hips with a pilllow and have the bag no higher than 18 inches above your hips, when you first start. Prime the tube with fluid so you do not get air into your intestines, only fluid wants to be introduced. Air will cause gas and more discomfort. Make sure the tube is well lubricated, then, slowly and gently insert it using a twisting motion. Breathe.

There WILL be an urge to evacuate right away, hang in there for as long as you can. Keep massaging the fluid into the intestines to get it to move around. Make sure you breath deeply, this helps. You may feel some cramping and discomfort. You can move on to your left side if you like, resting 5 minutes there, then rising to a hands and knees position for awhile, then on to your back and finally on to your right side. This will allow the water to move through your entire intestinal tract. Massaging in a right to left circular fashion will help to loosen up any debris clinging to the intestinal walls.

When you do evacuate, you may notice different size gelatinous pellets of waxy-looking material of various colors, possibly tourquoise, red or black. These are the gall stones, gravel or pellets. They are hard and can float even though they feel compact. This hard bile clay has possibly been blocking your ducts and passages. It is great to get that out of there. It does not seem to hurt when you pass these stones, even though, as in many cases, they are fairly large. I have seen some that are the size of a marble.

You may find that for the next hours, even the entire day you may pass other stones or sandy gravel. You may not even pass the larger stones until after your first evacuation.

FINAL STEPS

You can now break your fast. Go slowly, start with a piece of fruit, then some lightly steamed veggies and small meals as the day goes on. Look at a good book on fasting to get some ideas. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated.

You have cleansed your intestinal flora while doing the enema. It is a good idea to do a course of mixed multi flora supplement to replace them. To find out how to replace your flora with one of the BEST probiotics available, read about Primal Defense
here.

Rest and relax during the day. Remember to give yourself praise for doing something good for your health.
